Every now and then I think it’s important to check in with ourselves to make sure we’re focusing our time and energy in the most meaningful way. Over the past several weeks pandemic-fatigue pulled me off course, so for me that check in has been pretty recent. I’m feeling better now because of it, and I’m super excited to share what I did to get there.

Hey, Michelle Cederberg here, continuing my discussion around those pandemic blahs so many of us have been feeling, why it’s so prevalent (and normal) right now, and what I’ve created to help!

The other day I had a conversation with one of my coaching clients who told me that on the one hand she identified with the notion of languishing I talked about in last week’s video, but on the other, she figures she should be better at managing pandemic-life by now… and she was being hard on herself because she wasn’t.

I had to explain to her that it’s exactly because we’ve been managing pandemic-life for so long, that languishing has become more prevalent. The very definition of languish confirms that to be true.

LANGUISH verb
To exist in an unpleasant or unwanted situation, often for a long time.

The term “languishing” was coined by sociologist Corey Keyes, PhD whose research suggests you can have low mental well-being in the absence of a diagnosable mental health condition. Which is to say, you can be down, and not be totally out…not depressed, just not at your best. And, with all we’ve had to navigate over the last year or more, it’s okay to not be okay, even now…especially now.

And interestingly, our positive mental well-being is connected to so many things that we simply don’t have access to right now in a normal way: positive emotions, life satisfaction, a sense of meaning, interactions with society (this one has really been impacted), and positive relationships, and all of these factors have been weakened or tested in the last several weeks and months.

If you’re at all like me, there’s comfort in putting a name to the malaise, and to learn that it’s normal. It’s actually the first step to feeling better.

Now beyond naming it, more and more research shows that you can begin to recharge your emotional batteries and spark a sense of fulfillment, purpose and happiness, through relatively simple means. Since I value a small-steps approach to many things, I jumped on that notion to create a simple program for you that I am releasing today.
