Personal Accountability
“Never let a stumble be in the road be the end of your journey.”
~ Unknown
I’ve decided that sometimes, personal accountability is hard! Even when we want the ‘thing’, excuses abound, and with that first stumble, we let go of the goal.
Let’s stop doing that shall we!
Which leads me to my question of the week is, “How quickly do you fall off the ‘personal accountability’ wagon when life gets busy?”
In this post, I share my latest ‘failing’ around personal accountability (one week in), and the reminder I’m using to get back on track. Watch the video below, or read the transcript that follows, and keep moving forward.
When busyness hits you, how quickly do you let personal accountability slide? Whether it’s with projects that you have or exercise that you said you do or healthy eating that you’d planned and all those things, how quickly do you let personal accountability slide when life gets busy?
I’m sitting in a hotel room in Halifax. I was in Toronto yesterday. I presented there yesterday morning, flew I’m here, had dinner with a friend last night, and I’m presenting tomorrow. I’ve got work to do. And I told myself, I’m busy. It’s a busy week. I don’t have time to do my weekly message.
Although last week I said, “I’m back at it with imperfect action.” And here I am, second week in, telling myself I don’t have time. How quickly we fall off the wagon of our intentions. So, I’m throwing the challenge out there this week to ask:
How quickly do you fall off the wagon with your personal accountability when life gets busy? And what are the steps you can take to do it anyway… to get that thing done?
Take the first small step
So, yeah, I’m in my hotel room. I’m probably going to be interrupted by housekeeping very shortly, yet I’ve committed to doing the video. It’s the first part of this weekly message, and then I will post it and do all the things that I normally do, step by step. And, I’ll do it imperfectly from my laptop because I said I would.
The thing is, it’s not like it’s something I hate doing. I enjoy doing these videos, and I enjoy reaching out to all of you, but how quickly I can come up with excuses that this week it’s not going to happen. Well, let’s face it, it’s always busy. Life is always busy. Things are always challenging. There’s always one more other thing to do besides the thing that you told yourself you would.
Whether it’s exercise, (which I’m going to do a little bit later today), or eating healthfully … for me, eating healthfully when I’m on the road, or getting my work done regardless of my schedule, there are steps that need to be taken, even if you don’t want to.
Don’t Go it Alone
One of the things I also want to remind you (and myself) of is sometimes we need to ask for help. I have hired some people behind the scenes to help me with some of this. They aren’t yet fully integrated, but help is on the way.
I’ve always got my assistant, Tania, who’s works behind the scenes, looking for potential gigs and all that stuff. But when it comes to social media, I’m asking for help. How about you?
If you quickly fall off the wagon with your personal accountability when life gets busy, recognize that life is always busy. What are the small steps you can implement to keep the needle moving on the things that you want to do for yourself? I’d be interested to hear in what the things are for you.
