Unleash Your Impact

How are you making an impact in your life, and what gets in the way of creating the results you truly desire? Are there goals you’ve carried with you for far too long that don’t seem to get off the ground? Are you full of ideas but short on energy to bring them to life? Are you stalled by self-doubt?
As a high-performance coach and speaker, I want to help my clients push past barriers like these, to truly unleash impact with everything that is meaningful and important. I’ve come up with a few ideas that I hope you find worthwhile.

The Challenge of Unleashing Impact
Think about a big project at work. You know you have the skills and experience to do it. You might also have the drive to get it done. But if you’re exhausted and running on empty, you’ll struggle to succeed.
Or what about that renovation project at home. You might have the DIY skills, and the time and energy to take it on. But unless you have the commitment to see it through, before long DIY will be DOA.
It’s only when capability, capacity, and commitment come together that you hit what I call the Impact Zone: that space where your best effort flows, and you unleash your full impact.
Unleashing Impact means showing up as your best self for the goals that matter most to you and creating results that ripple beyond you.
Impact doesn’t happen by accident. It’s fueled by clear goals and powered by three forces — Capability, Capacity, and Commitment:
IMPACT YES, BUT FIRST, GOALS…
Every journey of impact begins with a clear and exciting goal that is compelling enough to spark your motivation, and clear enough to give direction.
Without a goal:
- Capability has no outlet.
- Capacity has no focus.
- Commitment has no target.
For me, this summer’s bike packing trip was a personal goal I wanted to crush, and all three Cs aligned, so I did. This fall, the development of my online ‘Impact Sessions’ is a professional goal I’m excited about, and that excitement, combined with the three Cs means good things are happening (stay tuned).

SECOND, UNDERSTAND THE THREE Cs THAT UNLEASH IMPACT
Once your goal is clear, it will come to life with my three Cs — impact drivers that, when aligned, power your progress:
- Capability – What you can do: your skills, knowledge, and competence.
- Capacity – Your ability to do it well: time, energy, and resources.
- Commitment – Your willingness to act: motivation, discipline, and belief in yourself.
THIRD, MIND THE GAPS
True ‘unleashing’ only happens when all three forces are aligned with your goal. If one is missing, you’ll hit a gap that will limit your growth:
- Capability + Commitment, no Capacity → POWER GAP
You have the skill and the will, but no energy or resources to sustain results. You risk burnout and disengagement. - Capacity + Commitment, no Capability → PROFICIENCY GAP
You have the time, energy, and drive, but without the right skills, your effort doesn’t translate into meaningful outcomes. Results are ineffective or absent. - Capability + Capacity, no Commitment → PROGRESS GAP
You have the ability and resources, but without motivation or follow-through, the goal never gets traction. You never leave the gates, or you stall before you see progress.
But, when these forces converge and aim at something meaningful – when you have the capacity, feel capable, and are fully committed – the gaps disappear, and your impact zone is unleashed. So how do we do that?
Four Tips to Unleash Your Impact
- Define the Target Before You Pull the Trigger
Think of capability, capacity, and commitment as the bow, arrow, and draw strength. Without a target, you’re just letting arrows fly into nowhere.
Ask yourself:
- What’s the specific goal or outcome I want to work toward right now?
- Why does it matter to me? (This is your commitment fuel.)
- How will achieving it create impact for me and beyond me?
How about this: Don’t just set a goal for the sake of it. Create a meaningful goal using the prompts I just mentioned. Write it down. Share it with someone who will hold you accountable. By crafting a clear target, you give your capability, capacity, and commitment something to shoot for.
- Audit Your Capacity Honestly
This is the circle most people overestimate — or ignore entirely. You might have the skills and the will, but without time, energy, and resources, you’re trying to sprint on an empty tank.
Ask yourself:
- Do I have the time to take this on without burning out?
- Do I have the energy to bring my best to it consistently?
- Do I have the resources (money, tools, support) to make it happen?
How about this: Identify one thing you can stop, delegate, or delay this week to free up capacity for what matters most. You can’t unleash your impact if your schedule, inbox, and mental bandwidth are crammed to the edges. Use some of that free space you create, to add in capacity-building activity.
- Build Micro-Commitments into Your Week
Big goals don’t get done in big heroic bursts, they get done with consistent, repeated efforts. That’s where commitment moves from theory to practice.
Ask yourself:
- What’s the smallest repeatable action I can take toward my goal?
- How can I make it almost impossible to skip?
- Who can help keep me accountable?
How about this: Choose one small but critical action and tie it to something you already do. For example, if your goal is to write your book, commit to writing for 20 minutes immediately after your morning coffee, before checking email. Over time, these micro-commitments compound into momentum … and momentum is fuel for impact.
- Level Up Your Capability
Even if you’re strong in a skill set, the demands of your work, industry, or life will evolve, and so should you. Capability is the foundation for delivering real value in your Impact Zone, and sharpening it keeps you relevant, confident, and ready to rise to any challenge.
Ask yourself:
- Which of my skills are most critical to my current or future goals?
- Where are my knowledge or competence gaps?
- What’s one way I could strengthen my abilities in the next 30 days?
How about this: Choose one area to grow and commit to a learning action. Take an online course, work with a mentor, read a high-quality book, or practice a key skill daily. Even small, consistent learning investments can dramatically expand what’s possible in your Impact Zone.

When capability, capacity, and commitment align with a meaningful goal, you step into your Impact Zone—that space where your best self shines and your efforts ripple far beyond you. It’s not about doing more, it’s about doing what matters most with focus, energy, and intention. Harness those three C’s, trust the process, and watch your results grow.
Now get out there and make an impact!
