“It takes courage to say yes to rest and play in a culture where exhaustion is seen as a status symbol.”

~ Brené Brown

When work resources get tapped out, we’re often asked to do more with LESS; less help, less time, less money… until the extra work becomes a mental and physical energy drain, and the workday becomes no fun.

When that happens, consider doing more with MORE. In this short video I share what I mean by that, along with a reminder of how to ignite high performance even in the busiest of times.

Watch below, or read the transcript that follows, and tell me what your MORE looks like.

Hey, Michelle Cederberg here, a little sweaty and out of breath after teaching my weekly spin class. I’ve been teaching spin for gosh almost 20 years and it’s a great way to get the energy up during the week.

No matter what’s going on, you always feel better after good sweat! Well in today’s class I was reminded of the phrase “We have to do more with less” as two of my regular participants wandered into class talking to each other, and complaining about the challenge they’re facing in their work, because so and so had been let go, work is piling up, and they’re being forced to take on extra duties – to do more with less – to do more work with less time, resources, people, sometimes money …which can be very frustrating. But it’s all too common these days.

It got me thinking that when we’re stuck in that struggle of having to do more with less, we might benefit from the idea of doing more with MORE.

Huh?

Well, if we have less people, and less resources, and less time, and less energy, doesn’t it make sense that we would be able to do more better, if we did the things that give us more energy, focus, and drive to stay mentally connected, and physically energized to do good work?

It’s why I’m always reminding people to take care of the engine that drives the mission. If you want want to ignite high performance, if you want to operate at the highest level – even when the resources are slim – you have to take care of yourself.

That means taking regular breaks. That means prioritizing  regular movement. That means eating well, hydrating, and getting good sleep at the end of the busy day. These are all of the things that we intuitively know we must do, but sometimes put off when life gets a bit busy.

I’ve got to admit that prior to going to teach my class this morning, I was dragging my ass. I didn’t sleep well last night. I thought geez if I wasn’t the instructor I would be finding every excuse in the book not to go work out today. But, because I’m the instructor it’s a wonderful benefit because I have to be there, and despite my fatigue, I got to the end of class and – guess what – my energy has been raised.

So listen to your body. It will always tell you what it needs. Do more with MORE. Don’t push aside the self-care you need for yourself to keep doing the things that are going to ignite high performance.

It’s my little thought that I had at the end of my energizing spin class.

Until next time I’m Michelle Cederberg reminding you that in order to Ignite High Performance, it’s not always about doing more with less. And, if you have to do more with less, make sure you do more with more focus, energy, rest, recovery, breaks, water, nutrition… you know what you need to do.
