How many of us think about how to factor health into our annual business plan, or our quarterly work goals? That would be a smart idea, because when we take care of our health it will dramatically improve how we work.

It’s a no-brainer, but when life gets busy, it’s just too easy to prioritize work over self-care … so this week I’m sharing a short video with a few important reminders as to WHY health is key to HOW you work.

Your physical health has huge implications for how you work.

Physical health is the foundation for personal and professional growth. I think we all understand this, yet when the life gets busy, we set aside the very self-care practices that provide us with the physical energy, mental fortitude and emotional capacity we need to do great work.

When you prioritize your health as the success-building resource it is, a lot of great things happen.

You build confidence. How? On the flip side of energy and vitality are fatigue and stress. It’s hard to feel confident when you’re dragging yourself through a busy day fueled by caffeine and constant thoughts of quitting time.

There’s no better feeling than facing a challenge or opportunity at work, knowing you’ve got the energy and confidence to see it through.

Also, a healthy mind is a focused mind. When you take care of your physical health, your brain reaps all the benefits. Exercise increases blood flow, and your brain gets oxygenated. Healthy eating gives it the consistent flow of fuel it needs to fire on all cylinders. Quality sleep gives your brain the chance to ‘clean house’ and you wake up with a clear head, and productive thoughts.

A healthy body can also keep you motivated. How? If success is important to you, energy matters. Doing great work is hard if you’re running on empty, and that fatigue often brings about brain fog, which means you’ll be more easily distracted.

When you have energy in the tank and feel good about yourself and your health, it changes how you approach most things! You’ll work harder, and be less likely to give up when challenges arise.

And let’s be clear. Good physical health isn’t just about healthy weight and lower blood pressure. Minding your blood pressure and weight is great, but a happy brain and ideas that are super dialed because of fired-up neural connections? Sexy! Really… do you come here often?

Many people complain that success just takes “too much effort”, but what if you had all the energy you need to crush it? To believe in yourself, and have the drive to keep up with that inner determination? That’s why your physical health matters!
