“The oldest, shortest words – ‘yes’ and ‘no’ – are those which require the most thought.”

~ Pythagoras

It’s true isn’t it? Those two simple words – ‘yes’ and ‘no’ – guide our decisions, actions … and schedules. Are you using them wisely?

As I work to manage a very busy schedule, I’m practicing how I deploy both words, and I’m being very strategic about when I say yes. I call it ‘HECK YES’ time management, and it’s helping me get back on track with with what’s most important to me.

Maybe it’ll work for you! Watch the 2-minute video below, or read the transcript that follows, and let me know if this is a strategy you’ll try.

Hey, Michelle Cederberg here with a little bit of a desk dispatch, as I’m off the road this week and in my office… thinking about time management.

I know that I’m not the only one when I say, “Holy cow, life is busy!” And, I’ve really had to be careful in the last little while about what I say yes and no to. My schedule has been jam-packed and I’ve found that I haven’t had enough time to do the things that I know I need to do, to drive the business forward.

It’s one of the reasons I say that goals are so darn important because when we make crystal clear professional and personal goals, we can use those goals as our touchstone, as our guiding force, as our compass if you will, to keep us on track. So if somebody asks you for your time, you can ask yourself, ‘If I say yes will this help me move my personal professional goals forward?’  If the answer is no, then maybe you should consider saying no the ask.

Sometimes we say yes out of obligation, or because we want to be nice, or because we know we can do a good job – even if it’s not necessarily part of our job description. Just because you can, doesn’t mean that you should, and these days I’m reminding myself of that.

When I get a request for my time, I want to feel it in my body. I want to feel truly excited about it. If it doesn’t feel like a HECK YES, then I think about whether or not I should say no. And I don’t believe that’s selfish. Sometimes we have to take care of ourselves by setting healthy boundaries, and by allowing enough time in our schedules to do the things that are important for driving our own initiatives forward.

HECK YES!

I’m going to leave that with you this week. If you’re somebody like me who’s trying to manage your schedule, and find time for the things that matter to you, then every time an ask comes in, ask yourself, ‘Is this moving my personal professional goals forward?’

If it’s not then consider saying no, and if you really feel like you want to say yes, let it be a HECK YES. You might decide that you  really want to say yes because it sounds like it’s fun, or because you want to be involved, or because you want to be a good person. Sometimes it doesn’t need to drive the goals forward if it’s a heck yes. But I really want you to feel that.

So until next time, I’m Michelle Cederberg, with this little micro hit of time management to help you Ignite High Performance.
